So I ended up changing out 75% of the zeolith on Wednesday (Oct 22). I was a bit concerned as I forgot to buy actual zeovit zeolith the last time I was over in the big city (duh!) and since we don't have it here (well I'd have a 3hr return trip to buy it at wildly inflated prices, whee!) and I still have some ultralith left over I figured I'd try that out, some people seem to think its interchangeable, some not. I'm over in Van again next month so I can pick some up then for the next changeout.
Anyway, its all changed and no repercussions so far. Some stuff has gone a bit brownish since the switch to zeo but for the most part those corals that were starting to color up under ultralith are continuing to do so or at least holding their own under the zeovit system. I've started adding Pohls Xtra 1ml 3x week. Its supposed to "improve color, growth and vitality!". Man maybe I should be dosing it to myself!! ;)
You know, looking at my tank here, I'm wondering if its just my fish that crap alot or how other people deal with all the detritus that builds up in a bare bottomed tank. I mean we're talking some serious piles here, some of which I can see but don't have access too....and thats just the buildup over a week! In those cases I think a vortech would come in handy. I have one of my tunze's near the bottom of the tank but the cord isn't really long enough to reach the powerbar (which is almost 2 feet off the ground). I think at this point installing a vortech would be more trouble than its worth but for my next tank I think it might be a definite possibility in keeping detritus directed to more accessible areas for removal. The tank detritus is also frustrating as I never get that "crystal clear" look that other people get. The other day I was surfing over on reefcentral and I swear some of the tanks over there don't even look like they have water in them. NOT FAIR!! Hell I don't need it that clear but it would be nice if I didn't have floaties everhwere. I feel like the fish are constantly swiming about in their own turds, which I suppose for the most part they are, and well they seem to enjoy it, much like its feeding time when the regal tang does his business. I suppose to a certain extent the rock is probly sloughing off a good deal of....well, rock I guess. I have no idea what rock sloughs off, some sort of dusty crap. Likely more fish poo. I have a herd of cows in my tank.
