I haven't really had time to deal with the tank lately, as a result I haven't done water changes in about 2-3 weeks or so. Finally got the chance to do one on Saturday. The tank really isn't looking too bad in spite of it. Still the usual build up of crud in the back forty but at least I don't have to look at it. Things are coloring up nicely but it seems that that is cyclical anyways, nothing stays colorful for long.

One interesting thing when I arrived home on friday, almost all the coralline algae on the back and side glass was deader than a door nail. There was one small section on the side panel that was left alive but the rest is white. I immediately checked the calcium reactor and sure enough it was clogged. I got it running again but found it really odd that the coralline had died while the other week when I had no CO2 running in the reactor everything was fine. Weird.

So I've discovered what kills those little hydroids that are growing like stink in my tank: Brown wafer algae. And the brown wafer algae is growing like stink in my tank too, I'm not sure which is worse. In this photo I think the zoos are winning because there were only a couple there a few months ago. I don't know which is worse though, I suppose the zoos are easier to peel off. However the brown wafer algae is also an opportunist and will grow on various dead SPS parts so I'm not sure whos going to win the war, I hope its me.
